Today’s Scripture…”And he said unto them, go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15
Thoughts for Today… I remember when Penny first caught my eye. To be honest with you, she had the hots for me first. (by the way, I don’t have my wife’s permission to tell this story!) We had just moved to Arkansas, and we were in fourth grade together. (Up until this point I just wanted to throw rocks at girls). She was something else…she was as cute as anything I had ever seen. She would wear her hair in a pony-tail at times, she wore the sweetest little dresses, had the prettiest smile with that middle tooth missing…just kidding, but she could run as fast as most boys as was as tuff as most boys to. She was great.
We were like most young couples in love. The giggles, the smiles, the teasing from all of our friends…just two fourth graders in love. Oh yes, and who could forget those important little notes that we passed around…that girls passed around that is. You remember the ones…”Do you love me?’…check yes or no. I learned early that girls like to hear that you love them, so I checked, “Yes” on the note and passed it back. From that day until we got married, Penny chased me for 10 more years…I finally got tired of running and realized that she was the BEST THING out there. You know, those notes worked great when we were kids, but as we grew up Penny wanted me to say it, she wanted me to show her that I loved her. Almost thirty six years have passed since the day we got married and it still makes me laugh today when I think back to that fourth grade class.
It also always amazes me how God can use the ordinary events of life, even that of a 10 year old boy, to teach us about Him. For instance, God asks the same questions that the little dark headed girl asked me so many years ago. “Do you love me?” Quickly we check off the appropriate box, “Yes. Of course I love you, God.” “Then, say it.” He responds. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” (Psalms 107:2)
“I love you, Lord,” we say with a smile, particularly on Sunday mornings or during our daily prayers. “Do you mean it,” He asks. “Because a lot of people say that they love me, but some of them don’t mean it. ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Mark 7:6)
“Of course, I mean it,” we quickly answer. “Then show it.” God concludes. “If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
Friend, do you love God this morning? Do you really love Him? If you do… ….SAY IT, MEAN IT, SHOW IT.
Say it with your words, mean it in your heart and show it with your actions.
