Today’s Scripture… “Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.” II Timothy 2:3
Thoughts for Today… The older I get the more I enjoy things about history. I love to just sit and watch a documentary about the past or read some interesting facts about things from days gone by. With all the different channels on cable TV today, its easy to find numerous programs and documentaries on television about World War II.
Of course, only being in my fifties, I wasn’t around during World War II. But I still find myself getting misty-eyed when I think of all of those who willingly fought and even gave their lives to provide our freedoms and liberties. Some of the programs say that the footage accurately portrays the storming of the beaches, it utterly shocked me to see so many people being killed before they even had a real chance to fight.
What I find most interesting is that there were two kinds of people portrayed in this war, and all wars. There were both the volunteers and the draft dodgers. The volunteers willingly enlisted to serve. They didn’t have to be coerced or bribed. They certainly didn’t have to be forced into joining the armed forces, but rather willingly joined because of their desire to fight to defend our great country. Did they know what it would cost or where they would be called upon to serve? In most cases, no. But, nevertheless, they were willing to go where they were ordered and willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice for the cause.
Then, there were the draft dodgers. These were the folks who did whatever they could to avoid enlisting. Some came up with phony medical problems or made up “religious beliefs” or other excuses to ensure they didn’t have to serve in the armed forces. Many even fled the country to avoiding defending the cause of liberty.
You know, the documentary of war continues today. No, I’m not talking about the fight between one country and another, I’m talking about the fight between good and evil. The fight between the Lord’s Army and satan’s army. You see, there is a spiritual battle that rages and I wonder today how many Christians are volunteering for service…
…and how many are spiritual draft dodgers?
Are we “good soldiers of Jesus Christ” – ready to defend and advance the Kingdom of God? Are we willing to go wherever called to go and to pay whatever price required to serve the King of Kings? Or, do we run away and avoid at all costs the orders assigned by the Lord?
Every single day of our lives there is a spiritual battle that takes place. It is the struggle for a person’s soul with Jesus wanting us to share the gospel with the lost and satan wanting us to keep our mouths shut. Jesus is encouraging us to advance, “Just tell them about the Blood. Tell them about the Cross. Tell them about the Sacrifice. Share what I have done for you.” All the while satan is urging us to retreat, “You can do it tomorrow. You’ve got plenty of time. They didn’t listen to you before, you’re wasting your time. You’ll get laughed at. What will they think of you?”
Yes, the documentary continues. The war rages on. Two armies are pit against each other. Battle lines are drawn. The Prince of Peace vs. the prince of darkness. The Lord’s Army vs satan’s army. And Jesus has called upon you to serve. Today, there is someone He will have strategically placed in YOUR pathway that He wants YOU to share the Good News with. What will you do, Friend…
…become a volunteer or a draft dodger?
