Weighed by the Scales – August 28, 2017

Today’s Scripture… “Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.” – Job 31:6

Thoughts for Today… When I came across this scripture the other day, it got me to thinking. What if everything we thought, we said, we did or we didn’t do were to be weighed on God’s scales…the scales of your life.

What if right before your eyes, a set of scales appeared.   On one side a label entitled “Close to God.” On the other side a label entitled “Distant from God.”  I wonder which one would weigh the most.  I wonder which one would be almost empty and which one would be way up in the air.

What if these scales were to weigh all of the things you do each day of your life.  No doubt some things would draw you closer to God and be weighed on one side, while other things you do don’t draw you close and could actually drive you away, they would be weighed on the other side. The other side labeled “Distant from God.”

“What kinds of things?” I’m glad you asked.

If God were to pour out the contents of each side of the scales and give you a comparison from the last 24 hours of your life…I wonder what it would be like.  Reading the newspaper and my favorite mystery novel, 60 minutes.  Reading the Bible, 5 minutes. The scales would be tipped towards the “Distant” side.

Talking about the sports scores with my buddies and the gossip with my co-workers, 72 minutes.  Talking about the Lord Jesus, 1 minute. The scales would continue to tip in the wrong direction.

Watching an R-rated movie, 112 minutes.  Praying to the Lord, 4 minutes, 30 seconds. (I mean I did say a quick prayer before going to sleep and asked a blessing before a meal)  Do you see a pattern forming here.

Decisions made without consulting the Lord, 128.  Decisions made after seeking God’s will, 1. On and on, as God pours out the contents of your day, which way are the scales tipping?

Times I demanded my own way, 87.  Times I was unselfish, 4.

Discouraging, negative comments I made, 91.  Encouraging, uplifting comments I made, 12.

Visits to the grocery store, video store, and department store, 74 minutes.  Visits to  those in the hospital, nursing home, shut-ins and the lost, 0.

Work for my employer, 8 hours, 15 minutes.  Work for the Kingdom of God, 4 minutes.

Doesn’t take a genius to figure out why maybe you weren’t feeling very close to God, does it?

I know this little story is a “What If”…but really, what if…how could we tip the scales back in the right direction?

What about you, Friend?  When you look at the scales in front of you today, what do you see?  Be honest with yourself.  Do you see scales dipped low on the”Distant” side because so much of your life revolves around yourself and the things of the world?  Or, can you honestly say that you feel “Close” to the Lord today because the “stuff” hanging on the scales of your life are Christ-centered?

I’ll ask again, when you look at the scales in front of you today, what do you see?

Have a “Wonderful DAY in Christ,”
